On September 11, 2017, Clarksdale Collegiate Public Charter School received approval to open and operate a public charter school in Clarksdale, Miss. The Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board, the board responsible for approving and monitoring charter schools, voted to approve Clarksdale Collegiate after a rigorous nine-month application process. Clarksdale Collegiate Public Charter School will be a K-8th grade tuition-free public charter school located in Clarksdale. Clarksdale Collegiate will prepare kindergarten through 8th grade students in the Mississippi Delta to excel in high school and college by providing rigorous instruction within a structured, ambitious, and jubilant school community.
“The Clarksdale Collegiate Board of Directors and I are thrilled about the decision and look forward to serving students and families in the community. We will continue to work relentlessly to ensure Clarksdale Collegiate is an excellent school that works with families to ensure all children are supported on their path to college success,” stated Amanda Johnson, Executive Director of Clarksdale Collegiate Public Charter School.
Charter schools in Mississippi are public schools that operate independently of the local school district. Charter schools are free, open-enrollment public schools which means that there are no enrollment requirements. Clarksdale Collegiate will open with 150 students and is now enrolling K, 1st, and 2nd grade students for the 2018-2019 school year through their website at www.clarksdalecollegiate.org/enroll. If more than 150 students sign up to attend the school, students will be selected through a random lottery in March. Clarksdale Collegiate will grow by one grade each year until they serve students in K-8th grade students.
Amanda Johnson, along with the Clarksdale Collegiate Board of Directors, is leading the work of founding the school. Amanda is bringing over 13 years of educational experience which includes teaching in a traditional district school and serving as a founding School Director of KIPP Delta Elementary Literacy Academy in Helena, AR. As a resident of Clarksdale, she is committed to opening and leading a high performing school for families in and around Clarksdale.
“The approval of Clarksdale Collegiate Public Charter School means that Clarksdale will be home to the first charter school in the Mississippi Delta. We are extremely humbled by the opportunity and excited to celebrate the approval with the community,” Johnson expressed. Clarksdale Collegiate will hold an event this Sunday, September 17th at 3:00 pm at the Coahoma County Expo Grounds to celebrate. There will be food, games, and opportunities to learn more about Clarksdale Collegiate. All are welcome to attend.
